Reflection on My Emerging Coaching Philosophy

As I reflect on my journey and the experiences that have shaped my career, my emerging coaching philosophy becomes clear. It is grounded in principles of discipline, growth, and a deep commitment to helping others realise their full potential.

Foundations of Discipline and Precision

My journey as a marksman coach in the Royal Marines laid the foundational blocks of my coaching philosophy. In marksmanship, hitting the target requires more than just aiming; it demands precision, control, and a thorough understanding of one’s own strengths and weaknesses. This meticulous approach has profoundly influenced my coaching style. In any coaching relationship, it is crucial to identify and hone the fundamental skills before advancing to more complex challenges. This ensures a solid foundation upon which further growth can be built.

Growth Through Experience and Continuous Learning

Transitioning from the military to various roles, such as a personal trainer, scuba diving instructor, and educator, I have continuously sought to expand my knowledge and expertise. My coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the concept of lifelong learning. Each certification and course I have undertaken has broadened my skill set and reinforced my belief in the power of continuous self-improvement. I strive to instil this same mindset in my clients, encouraging them to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

Goal Setting and Achievement

A critical element of my coaching philosophy is the emphasis on goal setting. In my experience, whether training Marines or mentoring business leaders, clear, achievable goals are essential. Goals provide direction and motivation, helping individuals stay focused and measure their progress. I work collaboratively with my clients to set realistic and meaningful goals, revisiting and adjusting them to ensure continuous progress and achievement.

Embracing Stoicism and Emotional Intelligence

Inspired by the principles of stoicism, I incorporate its virtues of wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance into my coaching practice. These virtues help guide individuals through the complexities of personal and professional life, fostering resilience and adaptability. Moreover, my work in emotional intelligence has underscored the importance of self-awareness and empathy in leadership and personal development. My coaching philosophy champions the cultivation of emotional intelligence as a means to achieve sustainable and positive outcomes.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusivity

My varied experiences across different industries and roles have taught me the value of diversity and inclusivity. I have worked with individuals from all walks of life, and I am committed to creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. My coaching approach is personalised, recognising that each client is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, and aspirations. I believe in fostering a coaching relationship built on mutual respect and understanding.

Synthesis of Theoretical and Practical Knowledge

Lastly, my coaching philosophy integrates both theoretical knowledge and practical strategies. Theoretical insights provide a framework for understanding complex concepts, while practical strategies ensure that these insights can be effectively applied in real-world scenarios. This balanced approach ensures that my clients understand the ‘why’ behind their actions and know ‘how’ to implement them effectively.

In summary, my emerging coaching philosophy reflects my journey, a blend of discipline, continuous learning, goal-oriented strategies, stoic principles, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to diversity. It is a dynamic philosophy, ever-evolving as I continue to learn and grow, dedicated to guiding my clients towards their own journeys of achievement and fulfilment.
